The Bob Schieffer College of Communication is proud to recognize Paul Schrodt, Ph.D., as the recipient of the 2023 Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Achievement as a Teacher and Scholar. Dr. Schrodt, the Philip J. and Cheryl C. Burguieres Professor of Communication Studies, exemplifies the teacher-scholar model. He attributes his love for his students and TCU to his success.

“This was an unexpected but truly special and memorable moment for me, one that I will cherish for the rest of my career!” Dr. Schrodt said. “Words cannot express how grateful I am to work at TCU and how honored I am to receive this award. This is a very special place, one filled with wonderful and inquisitive students as well as amazing colleagues, many of whom I consider to be friends.”

Dean Kristie Bunton, Ph.D., sat with Dr. Schrodt when he received his award Monday evening.

“I felt joy to sit beside Dr. Schrodt as his name was announced as the award winner this evening. I saw tears spring to his eyes, and I know that was because he is humble enough that he never imagined receiving this honor,” she said.

Exemplifying Scholarship and Leadership

Dr. Schrodt has authored more than 125 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters with a focus on family and interpersonal communication. Over his career, he has won over 50 top paper awards and national scholarly awards in disciplines, including the Dean’s Research and Creative Activity Award in 2013.

Under his leadership as the graduate director, the Communication Studies master’s program was named the best in the nation. He brings passion (and Dr Pepper) to the classroom with unrivaled enthusiasm. In a 2012 interview with TCU 360, Dr. Schrodt explained that he got his energy and enthusiasm from his students.

“Part of my energy comes from [how] I look forward to coming to TCU and to coming to work every day.”

Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Achievement

The Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Achievement recognizes extraordinary creative teaching and scholarship; the winner receives $25,000. Nominations are submitted to academic deans who provide recommendations to the chancellor. Finalists were recognized at the Welcome & Opening Luncheon and each receive $2,500.

Congratulations, Dr. Schrodt, for your incredible work for Schieffer College and TCU!
