ThenDallas, Texas
NowTroy, Ohio
Major: Strategic Communication

Stacie Shidler ’09 graduated from Texas Christian University with a bachelor of science degree in strategic communicationShidler always had an interest in graphic design and knew she wanted to pursue a career in marketing. She chose this major because it covered all areas of advertising. The classes I took supported my specific career path, marketing research and public relations tactics,” she said. “It was essential to me to have a broad understanding of advertising as a whole rather than just a design aspect.

When asked what opportunities TCU provided her to help transition into her career, Shidler said how classes gave her confidence when speaking in public. She not only felt encouraged to participate in group projects and to present design and advertising concepts but also received valuable coaching from professors and feedback that she continues to use.

During her time at TCU, Shidler worked at Real World IMC, a student-run advertising agency where she would meet with clients to gain an understanding of their needs, brainstorm ideas and then create advertisements, print material and campaignsShe also worked as a designer for TCU Skiffthe student newspaper. This experience gave her a competitive advantage when she began her job search. After graduating, she began working as a marketing coordinator at Monitronics in Farmers Branch, Texas. From 2010 to 2017, she worked her way from brand specialist to multimedia designer to senior multimedia designer, and finally, creative manager. In 2018, she decided to expand her knowledge of branding and work with new clients by becoming a freelance designer. Her new career gave her the opportunity to work with Teddi Mellencamp from the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.” She created the ALL IN company logo that Mellencamp used to promote her Accountability Coaching program.

Shidler lives in Ohio, pursuing her passion for print and digital design with Laird Connectivity as a senior designer. In this position, she oversees the company brand and designs all aspects of advertising campaigns.

Shidler highly recommends students participate in internships and try classes outside of their major interestTake advantage of internships and job opportunities. The real-world experiences will help you become better skilled in your field of study,” she said. “Once you have the experience, you’ll be much more prepared when you start to look for professional job opportunities. Companies will see value in an entry-level candidate that has quality experience on their resume versus a candidate that does not.

Most importantly, Shidler advises students to enjoy their time at TCU while you can. It’s the perfect time to absorb as much information as possible and make lasting friendships and memories.
