TCU’s Global Academy hosted Wetlands International on campus in October, and several of the school’s faculty members met Julio Montes de Oca Lugo, head of Wetlands’ Panama office.  Also, Dr. Wendy Macias from the school traveled to Panama as part of the Global Academy initiative and to help build connections for the initiative.

As a result, students are working on projects in spring 2015 for the organization through these classes: Publication Design, Digital Story-telling, Strategic Communication and New Media, and the senior capstone course, Strategic Communication Campaigns.

Two faculty members, Laura Bright and Margaret Ritsch, will lead a group of students to Panama in May, when the students will present the work they’ve done to Wetlands’ staff. The students will also visit the Panama Canal locks, hike in a rainforest, explore the San Blas islands and tour historic sites.

“We are excited that our students can participate in meaningful work with this organization,” said school interim director Jacqueline Lambiase, “and they will gather further data and cultural information in May to continue this important partnership.”

An international nonprofit, Wetlands International works to maintain and restore wetlands and their resources for the benefit of people and biodiversity.  The organization has more than 20 regional offices around the world and is headquartered in Ede, Netherlands.
