Areas of Focus

Brown’s areas of expertise include diversity in newsrooms, newsroom leadership and staff development, in addition to line editing and story idea generation. She conducts Fault Line training for newsrooms for the Maynard Institute.

Before joining the department of journalism at TCU, Brown held management positions at the Star-Telegram and The Charlotte Observer. She also taught leadership at the Poynter Institute. Previously, she was a newspaper executive at Knight Ridder and McClatchy newspapers; and a reporter for The Post-Tribune in Gary, Indiana, and the Chicago Bureau of The Wall Street Journal. During her time at the The Post-Tribune, she co-authored an award-winning series that examined the effects of racial segregation on Northwest Indiana.
