Meet Emily Plasencia

Name: Emily Plasencia
Major: News and Media Studies
Hometown: Haslet, Texas

What made you choose Texas Christian University?
I always envisioned myself at TCU. My grandparents lived five minutes from campus and I started going to Showgirl clinics and TCU soccer camps at a young age. When it came time to apply, I realized how great TCU really was. The academics, the athletics, the campus and the chance to be heard and seen as an actual person, not just a number… that’s how I knew TCU was the right choice!
What is your favorite event at TCU?
Tailgating and football games in the fall are my favorites. That’s when you really feel the spirit of what it means to be a TCU student. The sense of community that is felt and the overall pride. It is truly unbeatable.
Advice to a first-year student?
Make the best of your time here. I never believed people when they would tell me “these are the fastest four year of your life,” but they really are. You meet people from all over that will teach you so much about yourself and the world, so listen and seek meaningful conversations.
What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Journalism department?
My favorite part is learning about how influential the media is today. We are in more of an innovational time than ever before and with ever-evolving technology, internet and media, it is important that we are aware of how they impact us.
What is your dream job?
My dream job is to be the head of marketing and social media for a nonprofit that represents children. My minor is social work and through that I have learned of the many adversities that minorities face in our country. I am also very passionate about creativity and social media. This position would allow me to be an advocate for the injustices in our country and be a voice for children that don’t have one, all the while being able to live out my passion day by day.
