Melita M. Garza, associate professor of Journalism, was named one of three finalists for the 2019 Tankard Book Award given by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). Her book, They Came to Toil: Newspaper Representations of Mexicans and Immigrants in the Great Depression, published by University of Texas Press, analyzes how news reporting of forced deportations of Mexicans in the 1930s created representations of Mexican Americans that endure today.

The Tankard Book Award was established in 2007 to honor the late James W. Tankard, Jr., a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin. The award recognizes the many contributions Tankard, a former editor of Journalism Monographs, made to the field of journalism and mass communication education.
