Communication Studies with Tatyana Garcia

Year: Senior
Major: Communication Studies
Hometown: San Jose, California

Tatyana Garcia lived in California her whole life and wanted to explore and experience something new, so coming to Texas Christian University was the perfect pick for her. Once she visited the campus, her decision to come to this university was solidified.

After considering other degrees, Garcia decided to pursue her dream to work in a position where the main focus is with people. She has always been considered a people person and wanted to learn more about the way they communicate. She wanted to be in an environment where she has the opportunity to work around people and not sit behind a computer all day.

Through this department, Garcia has developed better interpersonal skills as well as many traits to look for in the workplace someday. She is currently in a nonverbal communication class and is interested in experiencing interactions she’s learned about in class. She feels her classes have provided many opportunities, such as studying abroad.

Garcia studied abroad in Seville, Spain. “Studying abroad has helped my confidence and communication skills immensely,” Garcia explains. She feels as though she is more comfortable in conversations and is able to learn from her classes and apply it to real-life situations.

Some advice Garcia has for first-year students is to focus on your schoolwork and learn how to balance school with your personal life. She thinks it is important to not over exert yourself but also keep your future in mind and work hard every day.
