CLASS OF 2020: Vernon Scott – More than an Athlete

Name: Vernon Scott
Hometown: Mansfield, Texas
Class: Senior
Major: Communication Studies

Coming out of Summit High School in Mansfield, Texas, Vernon Scott was the 11th ranked safety in the state. Family is important to Scott, so he ultimately chose to attend Texas Christian University to stay close to home, play on the Big 12 stage and earn a degree from a prestigious university.

“A TCU degree means hard work for four years,” Scott said. “To get a degree is something I’ll be very proud of. My mom will also be very proud of me when I earn a degree from TCU.”

Scott’s mother was the first on her side of the family to earn a college degree and he’s passionate about following in her footsteps.

Scott has played at TCU since he was a true freshman and ended his 2018 season with 38 tackles. Although he’s proven to be talented on the field, football isn’t the only thing he values at TCU.

“I’m a student-athlete; I’m a student first before athlete. Football players have a stereotype that we don’t do any work,” Scott said. “So I try to show my professors respect every day by coming to class ready to work.”

Scott has been thriving both on the field and in the classroom. He began school as a movement science major, but quickly decided that wasn’t the path for him, so he changed his major to communication studies.

Scott chose this major because it is broad and there are many careers in which a communication degree is beneficial. Another perk is the opportunity to network with professors and professionals who support the Bob Schieffer College of Communication.

The classes in the major are also accommodating with Scott’s rigorous football schedule. He takes classes in the morning up until afternoon practice and sometimes takes night classes as soon as he finishes practice.

Immediately after graduation, Scott aspires to play in the NFL. However, when his football career comes to an end, Scott would like to pursue a career in the sports industry. Last summer, he interned for TCU Athletics as an athletics communication intern. He had the opportunity to see the sports world from a new perspective and gain insight on potential future careers.

“One of my passions is sports,” Scott said. “I want to work around sports for a living. I’m just making sure that I have the right network and I’m making the right connections to be successful.”
