Class of 2019: Nicolette Nelson

Name: Nicolette Nelson
Major: Communication Studies major with a minor in Child Development

As a Southern California native, Nicolette Nelson ’19 adapted quickly to the Texas Christian University culture and Texas lifestyle upon entering college in 2015. Nelson declared communication studies as her major and soon started classes that would prepare her for her future career. Nelson said courses like Organizational Communication were very helpful because they gave an accurate representation of how people communicate in the workplace.

Nelson said she also took the Internship course during her senior year where she was able to experience different jobs to see what she liked and did not like when applying for future jobs. This course also has a component where she met weekly with other students who had internships to debrief and discuss the workplace environment. “This course was a unique way to get work experience while still being in school,” she said. Another memorable course was Group Communication, because it taught her skills on how to work with a team in a professional setting, something she does on a daily basis

After graduation, Nelson headed to Dallas like many TCU alumni do and started working as a senior marketing consultant for MultiView, Inc. Within her first few months, she gained skills and created connections with those in her company. However, she felt as though she was called to a different career path. Through mutual connections and faith, she interviewed, and then accepted the position as a digital ad specialist for Inprov under RainCloud Media.

Today, Nelson manages omni channel ad campaigns on platforms such as Facebook, Programmatic and Search Advertising. “In the mornings I go in and check my campaigns, ensure pacing on spending, and check in with clients,” she said. “Then I typically have internal meetings with account directors or the creative team, and I often lead creative strategy meetings as well.”

Throughout her time at TCU, Nelson never really expected to end up in the position she has now. “Even though I was a communication studies major, my job is very strategic communication driven and being exposed to classes and collaborating with people within the Bob Schieffer College of Communication helped me with my current job,” she said. She is very grateful for TCU and the connections she made that led her to where she is now.
