Tania Moreno Matveeva ’25 knew when she came to TCU that she wanted to find a major that enhanced her skills on the court, but she wasn’t sure what that might look like.

“I never had a set major in mind,” explained Moreno. “I tend to live in the present and love taking advantage of opportunities that come my way to shape my future.”

From a young age, Moreno knew she was going to play volleyball — it was in her blood. Her mother, Olga Matveeva, played beach volleyball professionally, and her father, Juan Manuel Moreno, was her mother’s coach. But she didn’t realize the opportunities that would present themselves when she followed her doubles partner, Daniela Álvarez ’24, to TCU. Now, the pair are two of the record nine Horned Frogs competing in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

In 2017, Álvarez, now a graduate student in TCU Neeley, and Moreno met at the National Training Center for volleyball in Spain, where they are both from. They immediately clicked on the court. Álvarez dreamed of studying in the U.S. for college and came to TCU, and Moreno followed a year later.

While Moreno wasn’t looking for something in particular, communication studies stood out as something that could help her on and off the court.

“As a professional beach volleyball athlete, effective communication is crucial,” Moreno explained. “On the court, clear communication with my partner is essential for strategy and performance,” she explains. “Off the court, understanding media interactions, public relations and team dynamics is vital for career growth. My studies help me navigate various interactions, work with teammates, negotiate with sponsors and build stronger relationships.”

Through beach volleyball and communication studies, Moreno has found a passion for connection with others, for conveying ideas across languages and for pursuing change within the sport and the global community.

“Communication studies offers me the perfect blend of skills and knowledge to thrive as a professional athlete and beyond,” she said. “It allows me to understand and navigate my environment effectively, improve my personal and professional relationships and use the power of communication to achieve my goals.”

Moreno’s passion and dedication on the court has led her to fulfill one of her lifelong dreams—competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris where Moreno and Álvarez will represent their home country.

“It’s not just about representing my country, but also about sharing this journey with everyone who has supported us along the way,” she said. “The encouragement we’ve received during the Olympic qualifiers has been key to our success.”

Moreno’s mother played beach volleyball professionally but never reached the coveted spot at the Olympics. Now, Moreno is fulfilling her family’s dream.

“Being part of the Olympics is about more than just the competition,” she said. “It’s about the dedication, pride and honor of representing my country and family on such a big stage. I’m simply grateful.”

Her advice to anyone wanting to set themselves up for success is to “enjoy every moment and never give up on your dreams.”
