Life Through the Lens: Andrew Van Heusden

Majoring in film, television and digital media and journalism

Whether Andrew Van Heusden is in front of the camera or behind it, there is no doubt he can tell a story. And he’s no rookie, either. Van Heusden has been bringing stories to life ever since he was eight years old.

“That is what I love about this major,” he said. “It allows me to think outside the box.”

Recently, Van Heusden participated in the SFA 24-Hour Film Festival — a competition where he had to create a horror flick in a day. He’s exhausted but still hard at work preparing this week’s newscast for student media.

“I prefer to be behind the camera because I feel like I am learning something new,” Van Heusden said. “I don’t mind being in front of the camera and I encourage everyone interested in film to try it once, but overall I love being behind the scenes.”

When he’s not creating movies in a day, you can find him laser-focused on all sorts of creative projects in Moudy South.

In addition to producing content and reporting for TCU’s student media, Van Heusden just released an entertainment podcast titled Frogflix.

“We all have dreams and we are all pursuing them,” Van Heusden said. “I know for a fact it’s not easy to make it big in the film business. Regardless, I have learned to just keep moving forward because people will notice.”

Although he doesn’t have a dream job just yet, he said an invitation to the Academy Awards would be amazing.
