A Texas native with a creative flare, Lauren Malette found the strategic communication major at T<\/span>exas Christian University<\/span>\u00a0to be the perfect path for her education. With her interest in art in high school, she knew she wanted to find a major that allowed her to express her creativity, while also pushing her to make a difference in society in an impactful way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Advertising is an aspect of the strategic communication program that really intrigued Malette. \u201cI thought I had to be a\u00a0<\/span>business major to get into advertising, which I did not want to be, but then I found strategic communication and eventually design studies,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malette recently decided to add a design studies major to her plate<\/span>. \u201cI<\/span>\u00a0would recommend the strategic communication and design studies pair<\/span>,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s more challenging but it allows you more creative freedom in a design aspect<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With her passion for her majors, Malette identified\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>esign as the most valuable and impactful class she has taken so far. \u201cIt made me realize that I really like working with the Adobe programs like Illustrator,\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>nDesign and Photoshop. It also just gave me a really solid skill set for putting something I\u2019m passionate about into practice<\/span>,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Design made me realize I definitely was in the right place because I really liked what I was doing and what I can do with those skills<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malette has put those new skills into practice in the real world<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>had<\/span>\u00a0an internship with Academy Four, where she work<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a014 hours a week. At the nonprofit, Malette help<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0create digital content to attract volunteers to mentor fourth graders. She also utilizes her skills within her sorority through\u00a0<\/span>public relation<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0efforts.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malette\u2019s internship opportunity was made available to her through connections within the strategic communication department, and she\u2019s very appreciative of that. She heard about Academy Four from Madison McQuary, a friend Malette met in her <\/span>D<\/span>iversity class.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malette also identified the impact that her\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>iversity class had on her. \u201c<\/span>Broc<\/span>\u00a0Sears has honestly been the most impactful person in my education. I took\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>iversity with him, and that\u2019s really\u00a0<\/span>important in the market I want to get into in advertising<\/span>,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I\u2019ve also gone to him for a lot of design advice, and even though he wasn\u2019t my design professor, he\u2019s had really valuable feedback<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, through strategic communication, Malette says that her time in the program has not only benefited her in other endeavors, but also affected her vision of the future. She has realized that she wants to work for a full-service advertising agency, as opposed to an in-house agency. \u201cI like having multiple diverse projects to work on and not just working for one company<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked what\u00a0<\/span>one thing about strategic communication<\/span> she wished she would have known or think most people don\u2019t know, Malette immediately thought of her writing. \u201cI always thought that I was a really good writer in high school, and I was under the impression that good writing was the kind of writing that nobody can understand<\/span>,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>But something that I learned is that good writing is putting complicated subjects into easy to understand words. That\u2019s what communication is all about<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malette believes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>developing professional skills<\/span>\u00a0in the strategic communication program<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>dedication\u00a0<\/span>and working h<\/span>a<\/span>rd\u00a0<\/span>will lead her to great<\/span> things<\/span> in the future. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
