From Flint, Michigan, to Kansas City, Missouri, Lonyae Coulter <\/span>eventually<\/span> made her way to Fort Worth, Texas, to pursue what she loves most, journalism. Coming to Texas Christian University, she knew her place would be in the journalism <\/span>d<\/span>epartment because of her hig<\/span>h\u00a0<\/span>school experiences. During <\/span>Coulter\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0sophomore year of high school she decided to take a class in journalism and has continued taking classes ever since. With a passion for journalism, it is no surprise that\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Introduction to Journalism\u00a0<\/span>class<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has\u00a0<\/span>had the most impact on her B<\/span>ob Schieffer College of Communication experience thus far.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cAt first, I wanted to strictly do television news, but I\u2019m open to trying podcasts and radio as well,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>she said. \u201cT<\/span>his course opened my eyes, and I learned about other jobs I could do w<\/span>ith my major.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Coulter is able to practice her passion for journalism outside of the classroom through the TCU Daily Skiff. Since 1902, The Skiff has been the official student newspaper and a new issue is posted on <\/span>TCU360<\/span>.com<\/span>\u00a0every Thursday. In the newsroom,\u00a0<\/span>she<\/span> is able to work with other students who share her passion and talk about what they want to do with journalism as well. She discovered The Skiff at an event put on by the <\/span>Schieffer College\u00a0<\/span>where she met an upperclassmen journalism student who gave her a tour of the newsroom.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cI met the assistant professor of\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>rofessional\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>ractice and the director of\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>tudent\u00a0<\/span>m<\/span>edia<\/span>. The professor<\/span>\u00a0asked me how well I knew how\u00a0<\/span>to work with InDesign, which is the program\u00a0<\/span>used<\/span>\u00a0for the TCU Daily Skiff<\/span>\u00a0print edition<\/span>, and that\u2019s how I got started.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Coulter<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>now<\/span>\u00a0a page designer for the\u00a0<\/span>weekly<\/span>\u00a0Skiff and coordinates pictures and stories submitted by students to be published<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One experience from Coulter\u2019s first year in college that\u00a0<\/span>stands<\/span> out is when one of her professors took her class on a tour of the local NBC news station. In this class she was able to meet TCU alumni who worked at the news station, and <\/span>was able<\/span>\u00a0to see the weatherman practicing on set.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>She<\/span>\u00a0is eager to return to\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>news station and would love the opportunity to visit other news stations in the area as well.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked about her dream job, Coulter\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span>, \u201cAs of r<\/span>ight now, it\u2019s still up in the air, but I\u2019m thinking about starting a podcast while I\u2019m in college and continue after that. I also want to either have my own talk show or be a news reporter. I\u2019m still deciding because there\u2019s a lot of different things I ca<\/span>n do with journalism.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a second-year student, Coulter offers advice to not <\/span>worry so much about changing your major. She said it <\/span>is something that will just\u00a0<\/span>happen<\/span>\u00a0if the time is right<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Although she has not changed her major, she did make a shift to change her minor to writing to improve her journalism skill<\/span>s. With the next few years ahead in her college career,\u00a0<\/span>she<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>said she\u00a0<\/span>is excited to see where her passion for journalism will lead her.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
