Lauren LaMontagne is not one to be tied down to anything. She loves to keep her options open and take advantage of any new <\/span>opportunities<\/span> that come her way. That being said, deciding on a major was a challenge for <\/span>LaMontagne<\/span>.<\/span> Her indecisive nature hindered her<\/span> from choosing <\/span>a path for her occupation, <\/span>so <\/span>she <\/span>sought help by <\/span>t<\/span>aking<\/span> a career match test in her first semester of college<\/span>,<\/span> only to find out she was destined to be <\/span>a\u2026 <\/span>bartender.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Beyond that, the <\/span>career<\/span> results <\/span>following<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>were all centered around journalism.<\/span> LaMontagne <\/span>had a love for writing<\/span> since she was a child<\/span>. Her dad always raved about <\/span>how she gave the best<\/span> birthday cards<\/span> and <\/span>had the most<\/span> well-written notes.<\/span> LaMontagne\u2019s <\/span>o<\/span>ptions all seemed to lead back to writing, and she <\/span>now finds herself as a News and Media major at TCU<\/span>. <\/span>Her ability to find her true passion for journalism lead her to the <\/span>books<\/span> instead of the bars<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

LaMontagne <\/span>knows <\/span>she <\/span>is not <\/span>destined<\/span> to be a <\/span>reporter but<\/span> would be more fit <\/span>for<\/span> a position<\/span> along the lines <\/span>of <\/span>p<\/span>ublic <\/span>r<\/span>elations or <\/span>m<\/span>arketing<\/span>. <\/span>If she had to apply for one job right now it would be an editor for TIME magazine. <\/span>And if <\/span>there <\/span>was an article in TIME magazine all <\/span>about <\/span>LaMontagne<\/span>, <\/span>it would highlight the adventurous childhood she had. At age seven<\/span>, <\/span>LaMontagne <\/span>and <\/span>her family traveled for 10 months to 28 different countries. They left all forms of communication at home and only contacted people via internet cafes. They traveled by plane<\/span>,<\/span> train and<\/span> RVs<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>the most time they spent in one place was a month. By no means was this a vacation for them. It was a chance to try new things, meet new people and see new places<\/span>. <\/span>LaMontagne\u2019s <\/span>parents required <\/span>the kids to learn to say, \u201chello,\u201d \u201cgoodbye,\u201d \u201cplease\u201d and \u201cthank you\u201d in every language of the places they visited. <\/span>In Switzerland, they stayed at a family chateau that was decorated with <\/span>their ancestor<\/span>s<\/span> all over the walls. During their stay in Austria, they danced to the <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Sound of Music<\/span>\u201d<\/span> in the fields of <\/span>Salzburg<\/span>. In Thailand, they rode elephants, which then became her favorite animal. She spent her <\/span>seventh<\/span> birthday in Spain where they watched a European fountain show and rode in a<\/span> horse<\/span>–<\/span>drawn<\/span> carriage.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although she was <\/span>homeschooled during this period, <\/span>LaMontagne says<\/span>\u00a0she learned more during this <\/span>trip than any other educational experience. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Thi<\/span>s trip <\/span>shaped me because it affected how I view<\/span>ed<\/span> life and <\/span>revealed <\/span>new perspectives<\/span> to me. It was an opportunity to <\/span>try new things, <\/span>taste new things, <\/span>accept new things<\/span>,\u201d s<\/span>he said. \u201cI<\/span>\u2019ve <\/span>had a much more open <\/span>mindset because of that. There\u2019s more to life than the bubble we <\/span>had<\/span> always lived in.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

LaMontagne <\/span>has a strong connection with her aunt, the person she says has had the most impact on the strong-willed<\/span> and <\/span>confident woman she is today. <\/span>Aunt Anne inspired LaMontagne\u2019s father to lead his family <\/span>through their<\/span> world-traveling escapades. T<\/span>he qualities\u00a0<\/span>LaMontagne <\/span>has gained from her <\/span>Aunt Anne<\/span> are her curiosity, <\/span>adventurous<\/span> spirit, selfless heart<\/span>\u00a0and dedication to teaching herself new things.<\/span> LaMontagn<\/span>e also<\/span> descri<\/span>bed <\/span>her <\/span>aunt <\/span>as<\/span> proactive, independent, perseverant\u00a0<\/span>and a <\/span>busybody<\/span>. \u201cShe has c<\/span>limbed so many mountains, trekked through <\/span>S<\/span>wiss <\/span>A<\/span>lps, takes <\/span>weekly <\/span>art classes, taught <\/span>her<\/span>self how to play piano <\/span>and even how to <\/span>speak French<\/span>. Her motivation makes me want to push myself to achieve anything I want to.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Being surrounded by people who provided opportunities for LaMontagne to expand her world view allowed her to realize there is not only one way to live life. Through the influences of her aunt, her father and the rest of her family, LaMontagne has been challenged to learn through experience and develop new skills and knowledge. She has gained a deeper sense of satisfaction with the new skills and insights she learned from being abroad.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
