Raised in Fort Worth by a family of Horned Frogs, Hope Anderson felt at home on T<\/span>exas <\/span>C<\/span>hristian <\/span>U<\/span>niversity<\/span>\u2019s campus even before she began attending<\/span> as a first-year student<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Anderson has always loved watching movies and wondering how they are made, so <\/span>f<\/span>ilm, <\/span>t<\/span>elevision and <\/span>d<\/span>igital <\/span>m<\/span>edia<\/span> was a<\/span>n early choice and a<\/span> natural fit.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a <\/span>habitual<\/span> writer, <\/span>Anderson<\/span> hopes to use her degree to work on screenplays and scripts.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Using the note application on her phone, she jots things down all the time \u2014 scripts in progress, one-shot stories\u00a0<\/span>and <\/span>fragments of ideas. \u201cI never turn my brain off,\u201d <\/span>she said.<\/span> \u201c[It\u2019s] kind of an easy way for me to just\u2026 put everything out physically.\u201d As one might guess, out of all the facets of her major, <\/span>she<\/span> leaned towards<\/span> scriptwriting.\u00a0<\/span>She <\/span>took<\/span> production and industry classes, but she does not aspire to join the technical side of filmmaking \u2014 her passion is for the creative side.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Creative classes like Theory Acting for the Camera taught Anderson how to run scenes and<\/span> determine what her character would think rather than what she would think as her character.\u00a0<\/span>Even though <\/span>she<\/span> is not looking into acting, these classes showed her how actors will work and thereby, how to write for them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anderson <\/span>said<\/span> that out of all the classes at TCU, she was most nervous to take Business <\/span>of<\/span> Media. She took it the first semester of her sophomore year. She was dreading the <\/span>\u201c<\/span>business<\/span>\u201d<\/span> part because she <\/span>said<\/span> numbers are not her strong suit \u2014 until she found that the class focused more on the legal<\/span>, <\/span>marketing<\/span>\u00a0and profit-making<\/span> stages of<\/span> produc<\/span>ing films.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cT<\/span>he most surprising thing about <\/span>my<\/span> major<\/span> was<\/span> how convoluted the business side of the movie industry is. Most <\/span>movie <\/span>viewers do not <\/span>know about<\/span> the budgeting, the marketing and the legal activities that go into making a movie<\/span>,\u201d Anderson said. \u201c<\/span>Movies must be pitched, greenlit, and drafted several times before they are picked up by studios. Viewers<\/span> also might not consider the amount required to pay the cast, crew and lawyers; one shot in a high-budget movie can cost one million dollars.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Business<\/span> of<\/span> Media taught <\/span>me<\/span> neat and important information about what to do after <\/span>my<\/span> scripts are written<\/span>,\u201d Anderson said. \u201c<\/span>Writers send their scripts to the right people and, <\/span>if circumstances are kind<\/span>, get the opportunity to sell a work to a studio\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 but for many writers, letting go <\/span>of <\/span>our <\/span>cherished creation <\/span>can be the most difficult part.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anderson has not pitch<\/span>ed<\/span> anything yet, but has a television show in the works.\u00a0<\/span>She <\/span>took <\/span>Dramatic Writing<\/span>, which required a script<\/span>,<\/span> with scenes broken down, <\/span>for a full-length pilot by the end of the semester.<\/span> She<\/span> said<\/span> it was a helpful class<\/span> for her career but, in a more concrete result, the class prompted her to think of the future of her show and thereby allowed her to develop a whole, serialized television show with plans for multiple seasons.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anderson would suggest her major to first<\/span>–<\/span>year<\/span> student<\/span>s <\/span>not only <\/span>because it is fun but also because of the flexibility it allows.<\/span>\u00a0From writers to those behind the cameras to those on the industry side, majors can choose to work in movies, television, digital media, social networking, and mor<\/span>e. \u201cA<\/span> general career idea can <\/span>turn<\/span> so many different ways with <\/span>my<\/span> major.<\/span> The sky is the limit and I love that,\u201d she <\/span>said<\/span>.<\/span> \u201cCome in, have fun with it. You\u2019re not going to be stuck with anything.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the weekends, Anderson\u2019s favorite thing to do <\/span>was<\/span> reflect on the week with <\/span>a few <\/span>friends.\u00a0<\/span>They<\/span> went<\/span> to Poag Mahone\u2019s Irish Pub<\/span> a<\/span>nd <\/span>hung<\/span> out for a while<\/span>. \u201cI just like<\/span>d<\/span> t<\/span>o <\/span>forget that I<\/span> was<\/span> a student just for a little bit before I <\/span>had<\/span> to wash, rinse, and repeat for Monday,\u201d <\/span>she said<\/span>.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>With <\/span>a chill atmosphere, a great staff, and a menu fit for a college budget, the pub <\/span>was<\/span> our<\/span> favorite spot<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anderson enjoys listening to Beyonc\u00e9, who inspires her as a woman of color who has built a successful business empire outside of the music industry.<\/span>\u00a0In the same vein, Anderson <\/span>said<\/span> \u201c<\/span>Hustlers<\/span>\u201d<\/span> was the best movie of 2019. She was surprised at how much it drew her in<\/span>. S<\/span>he expected a superficial plot but she got a movie based on an interesting story and featuring women as more than just eye candy. \u201cI\u2019m a sucker for an all-female cast.<\/span> I just love seeing other women on screen, doing well<\/span>,\u201d she said. \u201c<\/span>That movie had a lot of diversity in it, too. I really enjoyed that<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the best movie of <\/span>2020<\/span>, <\/span>COVID-19 threw the industry into turmoil. <\/span>Anderson look<\/span>ed<\/span> forward <\/span>to her favorite superhero, Black Widow, getting her own movie<\/span>, but it has yet to be released<\/span>. \u201cI\u2019m a huge comic book nerd<\/span>,\u201d she said. \u201c<\/span>I love Marvel movies<\/span>.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>Black Widow<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u2026 that\u2019s what I\u2019m waiting for. She deserves it, finally.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
