Class of 2021: Katherine Griffith

Name: Katherine Griffith
Majors: Sports Broadcasting and Journalism
Class: Junior
Hometown: Arlington, Texas

Why Texas Christian University?
When deciding where I wanted to go to college, I knew I wanted to stay close to home. It also happens that I grew up going to the TCU games and cheering on the Horned Frogs. So when it came time to pick my school, TCU fit my local criteria and I just couldn’t imagine cheering for another team. Go Frogs!

What is your favorite class in your major?
My favorite class that I have taken so far is Producing the Live Sporting Event. I enjoyed this class the most because it is a really hands-on class. The students actually get to produce and direct TCU sports productions, which is great because we are learning our future professions by practicing in real-life situations.

What is in your backpack?
I always carry around my laptop, so I can take notes in class, keep up with assignments, and because I always need it. I also carry my ESPN book with me this semester, because I always need it for class. I like to color code my planner and my notes, so I have my big bag of colorful pens with me at all times. And finally, I always have a snack and a water bottle in my backpack to get me through my busy class schedule.

Are you involved in extracurricular activities?
I have had an internship with the TCU Athletics marketing department. I enjoyed my position with TCU Athletics because I got another really helpful hands-on experience in the sports world, which is where I’m hoping to find my career. I also really valued my internship because I got opportunities to network with professionals in the business, which could open doors for me when I begin looking for jobs.

What is your favorite place to eat in Fort Worth?
My favorite place to eat in Fort Worth is definitely Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant. I love the atmosphere – it’s a huge outdoor patio with lights and fountains. The food is also really good and everybody is always having a good time when they’re there.

Why did you choose the Bob Schieffer College of Communication?
When it was time for me to select a major at TCU, I knew that I was already interested in a career in sports. When I found sports broadcasting in the Schieffer College, it just felt like home.

What advice would you give your first-year self?
I would tell first-year Katherine not to worry about what other people think of you. Be confident in yourself because you deserve to succeed.
