Where are you from?<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>I am from <\/span>Santa <\/span>C<\/span>ruz, <\/span>B<\/span>olivia, in <\/span>S<\/span>outh <\/span>A<\/span>merica. Santa <\/span>C<\/span>ruz is <\/span>a <\/span>very tropical<\/span> and<\/span> humid<\/span> location filled<\/span> with<\/span> tons of huge<\/span>\u202fgreen palm trees<\/span>. Unfortunately, there<\/span> i<\/span>s a lot<\/span> of poverty that is prevalent where I <\/span>live.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When you are not studying<\/span><\/b>,<\/span><\/b> what are you doing?<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>I<\/span> am<\/span> either <\/span>with my friends or I\u2019m exercising<\/span>. I love taking walks<\/span> and<\/span> laying by<\/span> the pool<\/span>. <\/span>I try to <\/span>spend time<\/span> outdoors as much as possible. <\/span>Growing up, my dad was<\/span> really hard on us <\/span>about<\/span> sports and being active, <\/span>so <\/span>I think that <\/span>outdoorsy <\/span>desire <\/span>stems from that<\/span>. <\/span>I<\/span> play tennis and golf<\/span>,<\/span> but <\/span>if I had to pick an absolute favorite, it would be tennis<\/span>. <\/span>I<\/span> used to <\/span>play on a travel <\/span>tennis <\/span>team,<\/span> and w<\/span>e would <\/span>hop from city to city<\/span> inside Bolivia<\/span> to places <\/span>like<\/span> La Paz,<\/span> C<\/span>ochabamba\u00a0<\/span>and Ta<\/span>rija<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How has COVID-19 affected you?<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Every summer <\/span>I go home to Bolivia and we normally do a big <\/span>vacation<\/span> with <\/span>our <\/span>family. <\/span>Because<\/span> of <\/span>COVID<\/span>-19<\/span> this year<\/span>,<\/span> we didn<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t get to go to <\/span>Europe and visit Croatia<\/span> and <\/span>T<\/span>urkey<\/span> as planned<\/span>.<\/span> In March, I came home from studying abroad in Spain<\/span>, <\/span>and my family and I <\/span>just ended up<\/span> stay<\/span>ing<\/span> in <\/span>Bolivia<\/span> because the borders were shut down<\/span>.<\/span> I <\/span>also <\/span>couldn<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t work <\/span>in Bolivia<\/span> because businesses were <\/span>closed as well,<\/span> so <\/span>it was a long summer!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What <\/span><\/b>extracurricular activities are you involved in on and off campus?<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>I work at the B<\/span>rown-<\/span>L<\/span>upton University <\/span>U<\/span>nion (BLUU) <\/span>where I<\/span> monitor<\/span> the building and <\/span>do<\/span> hourly <\/span>head<\/span> counts<\/span>. My job is especially <\/span>crucial<\/span> right now because TCU is <\/span>taking strong <\/span>COVID<\/span>-19 <\/span>precau<\/span>tions and <\/span>being very specific with how many people they let in<\/span> at one time<\/span>. Outside of TCU, <\/span>I work with <\/span>an organization called <\/span>O<\/span>peration <\/span>S<\/span>mile<\/span>. This <\/span>association <\/span>provides fully-financed surgeries <\/span>to<\/span> kids with cleft <\/span>palates<\/span>. We raise money and calm the <\/span>parents<\/span> who are nervous about the <\/span>procedures<\/span>. <\/span>Most of this <\/span>volunteer<\/span>ing takes place <\/span>when <\/span>I am home in Bolivia<\/span> because <\/span>the m<\/span>issions are more prevalent <\/span>there.<\/span> It\u2019s<\/span> normally a full week of mission<\/span> work<\/span> from <\/span>7<\/span> a.<\/span>m<\/span>.<\/span> until 5<\/span> p<\/span>.<\/span>m<\/span>.<\/span> I am <\/span>typically <\/span>at the hospital <\/span>work<\/span>ing<\/span> as <\/span>a <\/span>translator<\/span> for <\/span>the <\/span>American <\/span>doctors <\/span>or the patients.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Advice to a first-year student?<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Be open-minded and explore. Be <\/span>willing<\/span> to <\/span>meet <\/span>new people because you<\/span>\u2019<\/span>ll <\/span>end up <\/span>making<\/span> so<\/span> many <\/span>new <\/span>interesting<\/span> friendships<\/span>.<\/span> Coming from another country<\/span> where people are very <\/span>square<\/span> and close<\/span>–<\/span>minded <\/span>with<\/span> their thoughts<\/span>, I <\/span>was prepared to adjust and think outside of my comfort zone. This mindset<\/span> has <\/span>definitely\u202f<\/span>expanded my thought process and<\/span> allowed me to view life through many new perspectives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you could sum up your college experience <\/span><\/b>in <\/span><\/b>one word what would it be?<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Life<\/span>-c<\/span>hanging<\/span>.<\/span> It gave me an entirely diff<\/span>erent<\/span> perspective on life <\/span>and<\/span> how I should be<\/span>come even <\/span>more<\/span> open<\/span>–<\/span>minded<\/span> in my <\/span>opinions, in what I am accepting of, and <\/span>of what is \u201cnormal<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> Life-changing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>because it taught me to be <\/span>adventurous and<\/span> enjoy<\/span> being<\/span> in <\/span>new places<\/span> that weren\u2019t necessarily in my comfort zone<\/span>. <\/span>L<\/span>ife<\/span>-c<\/span>hanging<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>because I met <\/span>my<\/span> best friends<\/span>. Life-changing\u00a0<\/span>because I made<\/span> the best memories.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
