Grace Graubart had her life planned out ever since she was <\/span>a <\/span>little<\/span> girl<\/span> and Texas Christian University was n<\/span>ever<\/span> in the picture. Her mo<\/span>ther<\/span> went to Southern Methodist University, so Graubart always thought she would end up there. When she was old enough to tour colleges, she stopped by TCU after <\/span>visiting<\/span> SMU<\/span>. <\/span>TCU had an overwhelming impact on her. \u201cRight when I stepped out of the car, I fell in love with TCU<\/span>,\u201d<\/span> she<\/span> said. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>I just had a feeling about this place<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d She applied to <\/span>TCU and<\/span> has loved every minute of it<\/span> since<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Graubart <\/span>start<\/span>ed<\/span> college <\/span>as a journalism major<\/span>. <\/span>S<\/span>he <\/span>later <\/span>realized that <\/span>her confidence and friendliness could be <\/span>utilized <\/span>in co<\/span>mmunication <\/span>st<\/span>udies<\/span>, which ended up being the perfect fit for her.<\/span> \u201cI\u2019ve always had an outgoing and personable personality,<\/span>\u201d she said.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>I thought that<\/span> majoring in <\/span>communication studies would benefit me <\/span>the <\/span>most<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of <\/span>Graubart\u2019s<\/span> favorite aspects <\/span>of<\/span> the Communication Studies <\/span>department<\/span> is<\/span> the teachers<\/span>.<\/span> \u201cTCU has a really good range of teachers, especially in the <\/span>Bob <\/span>Schieffer College<\/span> of Communication,\u201d <\/span>she<\/span> said. \u201c<\/span>Many of my professors have impressive degrees<\/span>,<\/span> and I know I\u2019m getting the best education from the best teachers<\/span>.\u201d<\/span> One of her favorite professors is Dr. Qinghua Yang<\/span>,<\/span> who teaches Communication Theory. <\/span>\u201cDr. Yang is awesome! She is very understanding<\/span>,<\/span> supportive<\/span>,<\/span> and wants me to do my best<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>Graubart<\/span> said<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Graubart <\/span>frequently uses her communication skills outside of school. She <\/span>holds a leadership role in her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma<\/span>, as the<\/span> r<\/span>ecruitment <\/span>l<\/span>ogistics <\/span>c<\/span>hairman<\/span>. Her position <\/span>involves much of the behind-the-scenes work<\/span> of the recruitment process<\/span>. She oversees several members <\/span>in <\/span>the organization<\/span>,<\/span> giving each <\/span>one<\/span> a<\/span> task<\/span> to complete<\/span>. This <\/span>position has taught<\/span> her <\/span>skills in <\/span>organization, leadership and delegation. \u201cMy role requires a lot of communication and responsibility<\/span>,<\/span> which I believe has contributed <\/span>a lot <\/span>from my major<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>she<\/span> sa<\/span>id<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although<\/span> Graubart<\/span> is <\/span>new to the Comm<\/span>unication<\/span> Studies department, <\/span>she<\/span> has <\/span>had<\/span> past work experience<\/span> involving communication<\/span>. <\/span>In 2019, s<\/span>he worked as an intern <\/span>with the Stevens Group, a public relations firm in Houston.<\/span> Her<\/span> tasks involved running the <\/span>company\u2019s <\/span>Instagram and marketing their brand. <\/span>Last summer<\/span>,<\/span> she <\/span>had <\/span>planned to work<\/span> for <\/span>PaperCity<\/span> Magazine <\/span>in Houston<\/span>, <\/span>but C<\/span>OVID<\/span>-19 <\/span>c<\/span>eased the opportunity<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With <\/span>Graubart\u2019s<\/span> public relations background, she has a dream job of being an event planner. \u201cI want to open up my own event planning company<\/span>,<\/span> specifically <\/span>specializing<\/span> in weddings<\/span>,\u201d <\/span>she<\/span> said.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>I\u2019ve always loved going to wedding<\/span>s<\/span> and embraced how beautiful the <\/span>decor<\/span> is<\/span>, so that is definitely something I want to do down the line<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of school, Graubart likes to spend her time cooking.<\/span> D<\/span>uring C<\/span>OVID<\/span>-19, she<\/span>\u00a0has found<\/span> a passion for cooking and started to spend <\/span>much <\/span>of <\/span>her <\/span>time learning recipes. <\/span>\u201cThis<\/span> was a great way to pass the time and hang<\/span> out with my roommates<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> she<\/span> said.<\/span> \u201cI<\/span> started an Instagram account <\/span>in which <\/span>I <\/span>post<\/span> all <\/span>of <\/span>my<\/span> meals <\/span>to keep <\/span>my<\/span> followers updated<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Graubart\u2019s advice to first-year student<\/span>s<\/span> is to step out of their comfort zone and recognize that college can be a very transitional part of their life. \u201cBe open and try not to say no to new things<\/span>,\u201d<\/span> she<\/span> said<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>You would be surprised how many opportunities can lead you to be the person you are today<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
