Desaray<\/span> Hickombottom<\/span> looks back fondly at her first experiences at Texas Christian University and why she chose to be here. As a transfer student, she knew she wanted to attend TCU after her first semester at her previous institution. \u201cTCU was actually my first choice for college, but I knew more people at my last university,\u201d she said. <\/span>\u201cBut once I attended transfer days and saw what it was like to be a TCU student, I knew I wanted to be a Horned Frog.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hickombottom started out as a pre-med student before she changed her major to communication studies. She <\/span>chose<\/span> this major because <\/span>she was<\/span> inspired by her mother\u2019s achievements in the field. <\/span>Her mother is a vice president <\/span>of marketing <\/span>for a credit union, and she <\/span>focuses on planning events that the company sponsors throughout the community. <\/span>\u201cI don\u2019t know why I didn\u2019t think of this major before,\u201d she said. \u201cGrowing up, I always went to the different events my mother <\/span>planned<\/span>, and I think she modeled it for me<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After choosing communication studies<\/span> as her major<\/span>, <\/span>Hickombottom<\/span> was pleasantly surprised that it perfectly fit what she wanted to do in her career. \u201cI thought it was going to be <\/span>mainly <\/span>about giving speeches, but then I learned it was so much more than that<\/span>,\u201d she said.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>I realized that the major teaches you about marketing and public relations, which is what I want to do<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hickombottom <\/span>believes<\/span> the best part of <\/span>her major<\/span> was<\/span> making connections with teachers, since they all <\/span>want<\/span>ed<\/span> to see her succeed. <\/span>She also <\/span>enjoyed<\/span> the various classes in her major<\/span>. One of her favorites was <\/span>P<\/span>ower and <\/span>I<\/span>nfluence. The class had a semester-long project, where the students picked a campaign to analyze. \u201cI really liked that at the end of the semester, the instructor invited professionals from the different <\/span>companies of the <\/span>campaigns to come to class,<\/span>\u201d she said. \u201cT<\/span>hat was a great way to make connections and even get internship opportunities<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hickombottom<\/span> recall<\/span>ed<\/span> all the lessons she learned from her classes and professors and how that helped her thrive in her internships. She <\/span>was<\/span> an <\/span>a<\/span>ccount <\/span>e<\/span>xecutive at the TCU Ad Lab, which is a part of TCU Student Media. There, she reache<\/span>d<\/span> out to businesses in the <\/span>Dallas and Fort Worth<\/span> area for them to advertise in <\/span>the<\/span> Skiff<\/span> newspaper and the TCU 360 <\/span>news <\/span>website. <\/span>One semester she was also<\/span> the <\/span>m<\/span>arketing and <\/span>c<\/span>ommunication <\/span>i<\/span>ntern for the Bob Schieffer College of Communication. \u201cThe biggest thing I worked on was helping film and produce a video about what people didn\u2019t know about the Schieffer College,<\/span>\u201d she said. \u201cT<\/span>hat was really cool to be a part of<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When she <\/span>was<\/span> not in <\/span>Moudy<\/span> South, <\/span>Hickombottom<\/span> was<\/span> involved with her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, as its <\/span>h<\/span>omecoming <\/span>c<\/span>hair. She <\/span>also <\/span>loved to go<\/span> out to eat at<\/span> her favorite restaurants, Eat<\/span>z<\/span>i\u2019s <\/span>Market & Bakery <\/span>and Blue Sushi Sake Grill, and she <\/span>work<\/span>ed<\/span> out at <\/span>CorePower<\/span> Yoga.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hickombottom<\/span> hopes to obtain a job in <\/span>Dallas <\/span>marketing for a sports team, but the memories she made here will carry with her as she moves on to her next stage in life. Hickombottom smiles when asked about those memories. \u201cMy favorite has to be when we beat UT Austin\u2019s football team this <\/span>last<\/span> fall<\/span>,\u201d she said.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>My friends came to visit from UT, and we had a great time at the game<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked to share some advice for incoming students, Hickombottom <\/span>says<\/span> that <\/span>they don\u2019t <\/span>have<\/span> to know exactly what they want to major in during their first year in college<\/span>. \u201cTake different classes from areas you\u2019re most interested in and see which ones you like the most,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
