New Major, New Trajectory<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew Peterson came to T<\/span>exas Christian University<\/span> with a plan. He was going to major in health and fitness<\/span>, join a fraternity<\/span> and start his own gym in Chicago. However, when Peterson switched his major to <\/span>c<\/span>ommunication <\/span>s<\/span>tudies his sophomore year, the trajectory of his life changed. Today, Peterson is a Bob Schieffer College of Communication graduate working in Austin, Texas, as a headhunter at GLG Gerson Lehrman Group and couldn\u2019t be happier.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Peterson was born in England and lived in Tokyo for five years before his family settled down in in Glenview, Illinois, 20 miles north of Chicago.<\/span> Leaving TCU, he thought he wanted to return to Chicago to open a gym and b<\/span>e<\/span> a personal trainer. After a year and a half of personal training, Peterson<\/span> realized the part of his job he loved the most was the sales aspect. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>I <\/span>didn\u2019t feel <\/span>my <\/span>education and skills were being fully utilized<\/span> in my role as a personal trainer<\/span>. My favorite part of the job was convincing people <\/span>t<\/span>o sign up with me\u2014it was what I was best at,\u201d he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Upon this realization, he started applying to jobs in sales<\/span>, ultimately<\/span> receiv<\/span>ing<\/span> an offer in Austin. Peterson loves living in <\/span>Austin. \u201cThe<\/span> culture<\/span> here is fantastic. There\u2019s stuff to do\u2026 festivals, street fairs, hiking, rock-climbing\u2014it\u2019s a very warm and welcoming culture.\u201d Even better, <\/span>he<\/span> loves his job and talked about how if he hadn\u2019t switched over to communication studies, he wouldn\u2019t have the foundation and skill set that helped him in his career. \u201c<\/span>L<\/span>earning how to argue and present my points helped me a lot in sales<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Peterson <\/span>said<\/span> a communication class he took about effective leadership at TCU<\/span> was <\/span>one of his most helpful classes.<\/span> \u201cI still have the book that I bought for that class about how to communicate as a leader<\/span>.\u201d<\/span> He said another<\/span> valuable <\/span>skill <\/span>came from<\/span> a communication class about current events.<\/span> \u201cL<\/span>earning to read your audience and how to present your points is important to know right now no matter what job you\u2019re in<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Peterson <\/span>has <\/span>sharpen<\/span>ed<\/span> his soft skills since being in the working world<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>he <\/span>had some advice for current students<\/span>.<\/span> \u201cIt\u2019s so important to not get caught up in the obstacles in front of you right now. Don\u2019t let them overwhelm you because even though you are stressed now, when you look back, these things won\u2019t be important anymore<\/span>. I <\/span>used to get frustrated with temporary issues and learning to manage stress and expectations help<\/span>ed <\/span>put things into perspective<\/span> for <\/span>my<\/span> long-term picture<\/span>,\u201d he said.<\/span> \u201cIs it going to matter in five years? Most of the time, the answer is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>n<\/span>o<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

O<\/span>ne of Peterson\u2019s <\/span>favorite<\/span> hobbies is reading, and he wanted to share <\/span>two <\/span>books that he believes everybody should read:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe American Spirit\u201d by David McCullough<\/span> and \u201cUnbroken\u201d by Laura Hillenbrand.<\/span><\/p>\n

All in all, Peterson in <\/span>very<\/span> thankful<\/span> for his time at TCU and is especially grateful for his time in the Bob Schieffer College of Communication. <\/span>It excites him to think<\/span> about the skill set that today\u2019s TCU students <\/span>are building<\/span> and what they will be able to do with their futures after graduation.
