Kendalyn Ferner<\/span>\u2019s <\/span>eyes lit up as she recalled deciding to be a part of the Texas Christian University family. \u201cTCU was not my first pick; in fact, TCU was not even on my radar when I was applying to colleges<\/span>,\u201d she said. \u201cI<\/span>t was because of a trip I took with a friend to Fort Worth one day<\/span> and we ended up spending the day at TCU<\/span>. <\/span>I<\/span> unequivocally<\/span> fell in love with the TCU culture<\/span>. <\/span>It <\/span>felt as if I was<\/span> at a big university, but with the small school feel<\/span>.<\/span> It was no question on where I should <\/span>attend<\/span> after that trip<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally declaring business as her major, <\/span>Ferner <\/span>later <\/span>decided that <\/span>having<\/span> a communication studies <\/span>degree <\/span>would better prepare her for <\/span>a<\/span> future role in politics. \u201cI realized that being a business major would require me to be<\/span> proficient in math, and that is just not how my brain <\/span>functions<\/span>,\u201d she said. \u201cI chose communication studies as a major because every career path requires effective communication skills, particularly crisis management in politics, which is the direction I am taking after graduation.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Having<\/span> her goals<\/span> set for<\/span> a career in politics, Ferner knew she would need a better understanding of different cultures and how to properly communicate in <\/span>various<\/span> settings. \u201cI knew that having a minor in foreign relations would help me <\/span>build<\/span> a solid foundation to be proficient in my career,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ferner <\/span>believes she <\/span>has created relationships that she will have for years to come. \u201cAt first, I was nervous about leaving Georgia and coming to TCU, but it <\/span>didn\u2019t take<\/span> too long <\/span>for me to start<\/span> forming amazing friendships,\u201d she said. \u201cMy favorite memory<\/span> at TCU was a group project that I had to work on last semester<\/span>. T<\/span>he project challenged us in so many good ways<\/span>, <\/span>and it allowed my group to form a bond in which I feel we will have for many years<\/span>. T<\/span>hey\u2019re a special group of women.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Advice<\/span> that Ferner <\/span>suggests to <\/span>incoming first-year students is<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0not procrastinate. \u201cFor the love that is all holy, do not procrastinate,\u201d she <\/span>said<\/span>. \u201cGet yourself a planner of any kind<\/span>. W<\/span>rite down your dates because you\u2019re simply too busy, all in good ways, to keep up with it all.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
