Marie Bailey \u201915 graduated from Texas Christian University<\/span> with a bachelor\u2019s degree in<\/span> communication s<\/span>tudies. After graduation, she was a studio manager at SoulSpace Yoga Community for two years. Bailey said she first got into marketing after doing some grassroots efforts at the yoga studio. She enjoyed it, so she began networking and researching companies in Fort Worth<\/span>, Texas<\/span>. She ended up at S<\/span>impli.fi, a local programmatic advertising agency that uses a demand-side platform, as an account m<\/span>anager. From her experience in that role, she reali<\/span>zed she wanted more experience on<\/span> the agency strategy side. So, at the beginning of 2019, she moved to PMG, a digital marketing agency, as a<\/span> brand media coordinator.<\/span> Outside of work, she recently earned her RYT-200 Yoga certification.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While at TCU, Bailey knew she wanted to study communication from the first class she took in the department. \u201cI found the material more exciting than other courses, and I loved that the things we discussed applied to real-life situations,<\/span>\u201d she<\/span> said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of class, Bailey was a member of the first rhino conservation group. \u201cIt was great to get to know fellow TCU students who shared a similar passion and interest to end poaching of this endangered species in South Africa,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bailey said that her time in the communication studies department helped develop her public speaking skills. \u201c<\/span>Presentations don\u2019t stop after you graduate, so get comfortable speaking in front of a crowd,<\/span>\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bailey <\/span>said<\/span>\u00a0her major made her more culturally aware. \u201cOur beliefs and habits are defined most noticeably through our upbringing,\u201d she said. \u201cGrowing up, I was surrounded by a lot of people who looked and thought like me.\u201d Communication studies classes encouraged her to get outside of her comfort zone and think about things from a different perspective. <\/span>Her experience in the communication studies department made her more aware of those around her who come from different backgrounds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bailey is most appreciative of the professors in the communication studies<\/span> department and <\/span>said the program is one of the top in the country with widely recognized professors. \u201cIt was a huge privilege to learn and study with so many esteemed communication schola<\/span>rs who are well known for their <\/span>work in the field,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The class Bailey finds most useful in her career is Mediation<\/span>. She often reflects <\/span>on<\/span> the class when she finds herself <\/span>in a situation where<\/span> she <\/span>ha<\/span>s <\/span>to dif<\/span>fuse tension or energy. <\/span>\u201cIt taught me to see both sides and how important it is for all parti<\/span>es to feel heard<\/span> in any given <\/span>situation,\u201d she said. \u201cAs<\/span> familiar as it might sound, all of the group projects will prepare you for the working world.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked if she could go back to TCU and do one thing differently, Bailey said she would ask more questions. \u201cDon\u2019t ever be afraid to speak up because you are worried wha<\/span>t others will think,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bailey advises current <\/span>students<\/span> to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. \u201cThere will be things that you le<\/span>arn about in class that you <\/span>wholeheartedly disagree with, but I would challenge you to try and se<\/span>e things from a different side,\u201d she said. \u201c<\/span>The world could use more understanding and empathy<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bailey <\/span>said<\/span> she misses going to lectures and having in-depth conversations with professors and classmates. <\/span>She always felt empowered and encouraged to seek out <\/span>knowledge and learning at TCU. \u201cI miss th<\/span>at feeling and security,\u201d she<\/span> said. \u201cYet, I feel lucky to still live in Fort Worth and be connected to the TCU community.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bailey is enjoying her role at PMG and<\/span> looks forward to seeing where her career will lead her next.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
