<\/span>Abby <\/span>Vernacchia<\/span> is a <\/span>j<\/span>unior communication s<\/span>tudies major from San Jose, California,<\/span> and serves as president<\/span> of the<\/span> Sigma Kappa sorority<\/span> chapter at <\/span>Texas Christian University<\/span>. <\/span>Vernacchia<\/span> contributes much of her success in that role to skil<\/span>ls she has learned through the Communication S<\/span>tudies depart<\/span>ment<\/span> of the Bob Schi<\/span>effer College of Communication. “F<\/span>rom no experience in Greek life to now having the oppo<\/span>rtunity to serve as my sorority\u2019<\/span>s<\/span> chapter <\/span>president<\/span> is <\/span>a<\/span> reality of mine that I never would hav<\/span>e imagined when I stepped foot o<\/span>n T<\/span>CU\u2019s campus as an 18-year-old<\/span> fresh out of high school<\/span>. C<\/span>ommunication studies has helped<\/span> me manage and run my sorority,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Specific things that really stand out and have helped her in <\/span>her<\/span> student leadership position have been interpersonal communication, how to handle conflict, knowing how to ask for help and gaining perspective from outsiders.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vernacchia <\/span>plans to graduate in May 2021 as a communication studies major <\/span>and <\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>psychology<\/span> minor<\/span>. <\/span>After graduation<\/span>,<\/span> Vernacchia<\/span> plans <\/span>to <\/span>take the skills <\/span>she has<\/span> learned in the classroom and in<\/span> her organization with her<\/span> to the real world. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Communicating with others, holding people accountable, compromise, conflict, and relationship building, are all prominent in the workforce and I have had the opportunity to experience minor and extreme cases of all throughout m<\/span>y time as a chapter president<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From her experience as a chapter president to her many other leadership roles she has held on campus, she would most like to tell communication studies majors to \u201ctake what you learn in your communication classes and use your leadership position to act those concepts out in real life and that will result in not only your own personal development, but a much richer educational experience while at TCU.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Something <\/span>Vernacchia<\/span> would tell herself <\/span>as a first-year in college would be to <\/span>always follow your gut when making a decision or a call. Have more confiden<\/span>ce in yourself and your ability<\/span>. \u201c<\/span>I<\/span>f you are like me, you<\/span> enjoy being very busy and over-committed<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d she said.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>That is fine but make sure to take time to develop relationships with your friends and to have fun in college.”\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vernacchia<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> last piece of advice for any incoming studen<\/span>t or first<\/span>–<\/span>year student at TCU is to <\/span>utilize the resources you have on campus whether that is a professor, advisor or staff member. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Make connections and take the effort to get to know people from your peers up to the faculty and staff at TCU —\u00a0<\/span>community is everything here<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> s<\/span>he said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
