Coming out of Summit High School in Mansfield, Texas, Vernon Scott was the <\/span>11<\/span>th<\/span> ranked safety in the state. Family is important to Scott, so he ultimately chose to attend <\/span>Texas Christian University<\/span> to stay close to home, play <\/span>on the Big 12 stage<\/span>\u00a0and earn a degree from a prestigious university.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA TCU degree means hard work for four years,\u201d Scott said. \u201cTo get a degree is something I\u2019ll be very proud of. My mom will also be very proud <\/span>of me when I earn <\/span>a degree from TCU.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scott\u2019s mother was the first on her side of the family to earn a college degree<\/span>\u00a0and he\u2019s passionate about following in her footsteps.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scott has played <\/span>at TCU<\/span> since he was a true <\/span>f<\/span>reshma<\/span>n<\/span> and<\/span> ended his 2018 season with 38 tackles. <\/span>Although he\u2019s proven to be talented on the field,<\/span> football isn\u2019t the only thing <\/span>he<\/span> values at TCU.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a student-athlete<\/span>; <\/span>I\u2019m a student first before athlete. Football players have a stereotype that we don\u2019t do any work,\u201d Scott said<\/span>.<\/span> \u201cSo I try to show my professors respect every day by coming to class ready to work.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scott has been thriving both on the field and in the classroom. He began school as a movement science major, but quickly decided that wasn\u2019t the path for him, so he changed his major to <\/span>c<\/span>ommunication <\/span>s<\/span>tudies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scott<\/span> chose this major because it<\/span> is<\/span> broad and there are many careers in which a communication degree is beneficial. Another perk is the opportunity to network with professors and professionals who support the Bob Schieffer College of Communication.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The classes in the major are also accommodating with <\/span>Scott\u2019s<\/span> rigorous football schedule. He takes classes in the morning up until <\/span>afternoon<\/span> practice<\/span> and sometimes takes night classes as soon as he finishes practice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Immediately after graduation, Scott <\/span>a<\/span>spires to play in the NFL. However, when his football career comes to an end, Scott would like to pursue a career in the sports industry.<\/span>\u00a0Last summer, <\/span>he<\/span> interned for TCU Athletics as an <\/span>a<\/span>thletics <\/span>c<\/span>ommunication intern. He had the opportunity to see the sports world from a new perspective and gain insight on potential future careers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of my passions is sports<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d Scott said. \u201cI want to work around sports for a living. I\u2019m just making sure that I have the right network and I\u2019m making the right connections to be successful.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
